There are two different types of vinyl floors, there are click lock planks and there are self-adhesive planks.

When installing vinyl floors over carpet, make sure to only use click lock vinyl planks, don’t use vinyl planks with self-adhesive because the adhesive will damage your carpet underneath.

Before you get started, you are going to need a few tools…

  • Spacer
  • Ruler
  • Utility Knife
  • Measuring tape
  • Tapping block
  • Rubber mallet

First, you need to remove all the furniture and vacuum the floor.

After you have moved all the furniture out of the way, it is very important to first vacuum the carpet, also remove the baseboards and reducers to create a more finished look in the end.

When installing vinyl floors, you need to use a spacer between the planks and the wall…

Please note: if your carpet is very thin with no padding, you may lay your vinyl flooring right over the surface.

Why do I recommend click lock vinyl planks?

Because the planks will lock in to each other and can be tapped securely into place by using a rubber mallet.

If you have a high pile carpet or if the carpet has a pad underneath, you are going need more preparation before installing the floor because the pad will make the floor feel a little more squishy when you step on it, which can also unlock the planks over time.

If you have a plush carpet with a thick pad, you will need to create a more stable surface to prevent your floors from being squishy.

For high pile carpet, you need to put plywood on top of the carpet before installing the planks or else the planks will unlock over time.

What size of plywood do I recommend?

I recommend a ¼ inch plywood to create new subfloor on top of your carpet.

Which plywood is the best when installing vinyl flooring over your high pile carpet?

Get the 6mm ¼ inch plywood by Woodpeckers from amazon…

Make sure to measure the size of your room to buy the plywood that is needed to fit the size of the room.

Creating a beautiful new floating floor over your old carpet is extremely easy.

If you have low pile carpet than just install click lock vinyl floor, you really don’t have anything to worry about

If you have high pile carpet than you need to put the plywood first to help prevent your floors from being squeaky or else your vinyl floors will unlock.

If you have carpet that has a pad underneath, then you also need to put plywood first to prevent your floors from being squishy over time.

My bedroom had carpet and I installed the vinyl flooring on top of my old carpet, I did everything my self after reading this article. I haven’t had any problems with the new floor but I installed the plywood first because my old carpet had a padding. Well, the floor came up looking very good.
